Good afternoon,

After viewing your Helium 5G Q + A with Travis, Jeremy and Dennis I believe I would be a candidate to fill the need for helium’s FreedomFi 5G. Unfortunately, I am still not committed to the Helium Provided 5G antenna. After conducting some quick research I am able to find third party radio/antenna’s for CBRS, however, I am unsure if compatibility will become an issue. I can’t imagine that being the case but would you be able to shed some light on what to look for when researching FreedomFi 5G redio/antenna’s? This may also be a great video for individuals who are less knowledgeable such as myself.

Question:

I submitted this question on this webform, but it might have been for the last AMA and thus, too late. I don’t know if you got it so I’m resubmitting it, slightly edited and elaborated. Sorry for its length!

—————————————————————

Quantity vs. Quality

Since one gets credit for up to 18 of up to 25 witnesses for a beacon (soon to be up to 10 of up to 25); and as a witness one gets rewards based on the transmit scale of the beaconer and the number of fellow witnesses; it stands to reason that preferring hotspots with high transmit scales (high quality) and excluding those with low transmit scales (low quality) will produce the best beaconers and witness pools, and the highest HNT earnings.

I live in Berkeley, CA. My apartment location limits my antenna to indoors but I have a great view of rooftops for miles as well as line of sight across much of San Francisco Bay. Unfortunately my Goldspot with its stock 2.3 dbi antenna mostly witnesses low quality hotspots in saturated areas within 25 km, as well as a few nearby invalid neighbors in my hex.

There is a cluster of high quality hotspots on the Peninsula (between San Mateo and Woodside), to which I have line of sight. Does it make sense to use an 8 or 9 dbi patch antenna to lift my signal over the heads of my neighbors and narrowly target these hotspots in hopes that they will make up the majority of those my hotspot interacts with?

If so, how does it work ethically? I understand that the goal of Helium is to provide great coverage, but in the last AMA, one of your guests said that too much redundant coverage is not helpful. Is providing long distance coverage at the exclusion of already saturated nearby coverage, considered beneficial to the network, gaming the system, or neither?

In its announcement about the second rollout of PoCv11, Helium mentioned that there will be no distance limit imposed now. Is that likely to become a thing in the future?

I was just gonna get a patch antenna and try it out, but with PoCv11 recently rolled out — for real this time — I thought I’d wait to see what happens with other miners with high gain antennas. It also makes sense to wait until after your AMA, in case you decide to answer my question.

Sorry for so many questions in my question! Thanks for your blogs and vlogs, and this AMA!
