Deep dive into 5G with Jeremy Rollinson from PirateDAO. We also talked about PirateDAO in this one, and at the end discussed pursuing a DeWi grant as a team. Exciting convo!
0:01:27 — How is 5G different from Helium?
The Amount of Data. 5G will use lots of data. Helium is low data IoT.
Helium will provide mobile coverage where coverage doesn’t exist with existing carriers
0:06:17 — What are the futures with 5G ?
Trying to solve the PoC (Proof of Coverage) issue so we can promote growth. The problem is complex with 5G range (1000 feet)
0:12:47 — Will the Reward for 5G data come from the LoRaWan Pool ?
No. HIP 51, 52 and 53.
HIP 51. Primary Helium DAO
HIP 52. LoRaWAN Sub-DAO
HIP 53. 5G Helium Sub-DAO
0:18:33 — 5G in Rural Area (Starlink)
Yes. But look at the TOS (Terms of Service). Starlink is a residential service, not a commercial backhaul.
They will provide a business backhaul sometime in the future.
0:21:13 — What is the Perfect Spot for a 5G miner ?
With Helium 5G you are in competition with who else is providing coverage.
Your phone will connect to whoever has BEST coverage.
80% of mobile traffic is generated INDOORS
0:24:14 — Is the FreedomFi 5G really 5G ?
Right now it’s 4G LTE.
5G is a standard not a frequency.
0:25:23 — How many (phone) connections can a FreedomFi handle ?
98 Active connections.
LTE and 5G is way more efficient than WiFi.
WiFi is like a bunch of people screaming. LTE and 5G is like a talking stick.

0:29:52 — Pirate DAO
Helium is growing fast. And growing it well, but not great.
Not everyone knows we have to spread out.
Solution. Mining Pools so that we can move miners elsewhere.
Pirate Radio is a Smart Contract that connects people with hotspots with people who need hotspots.
Example. You have 30 places for hotspots. Pirate Radio’s Smart Contract is a template for a “Mining Pool” with 30 slots for Hotspots, their locations, agreement of payouts, etc.

Pirate Radio write up.
0:39:42 — Indoor 5G Hotspot that has no Outside service how does automatic roaming work ?
Automatic Roaming works IF your provider has an agreement with Helium
Example. If you go to a concert, you have ATT and your friend has Boost, and the concert venue has Helium but ATT doesn’t have an agreement. Your friend has a great connection and you’re left with 1 Bar.

0:43:25 — What is a Mining Pool or How do you set up a Mining Pool
Pirate Radio calls it a “Voyage” other DAOs call it “Season”.
The idea is there is a “Captain” who has 30 spots of land, what their use is, what they will be doing, and what their terms are.
The DAO is to help people with the details with a template.
0:47:11 — Kevin Q/A — I have a lot of hotspots, can use Pirate Radio to I find better locations to provide more coverage?
Pirate Radio is trying to get there. Problem right there is no way good way to assign Hotspots to “Pirate Radio”.
Right now you would have to say these Hotspots belong to this “Shared” Wallet. And would need a lot of trust.
There is no Shared Wallet for Helium, yet.
0:52:22 — Mint HNT, Flywheel Systems, Loris
Commercial Hotspot Management.
Pirate Radio is there to help everyone.
Pirate Radio DAO exists to empower the growth and usage of community-run wireless networks and equitably reward its members.
0:56:28 — Heat with Miners?
Heat is important to worry about. Heat sinks help. White reflective box. 5G miners have massive heat sync’s, but you don’t have to worry since they will be indoors. But, its long term effects of temperature fluctuations that can have an effect.
