Dove deep into the world of DeWi Grants with the Head of the Grant program, Clarissa Redwine. Great chance for us to learn about what the (now) Helium Foundation is doing to support the growth of the Network, and how we might help out with it.
Notes & Time Hacks
0:00:00 — Intro
Gristle Crue is brainstorming an idea for a group DeWi.
0:01:17 — Who are you (Clarissa) and what do you do?
Background with Hardware Startups. Worked with Qualcomm with Accelerated Robotics Program, Kickstarter Design and Technology Outreach.
NYU Law with Open Source Software
Job at DeWi is to run the Grant Program. Help fund community members that have ideas to help secure the network, increasing adoption, and building applications.
0:03:46 — Kevin’s University City Project
Met with the Mayor, plans on deploying a hotspot on his house. Mayor is really into tech and wants to be known as a smart city.
Early talks, plans on people or traffic tracking, working with infrastructure. Potentially 5G.
A good way to sell it is with Smart Meters, Garbage Collection, things to help make the city’s job easier.
0:09:33 — What does DeWi look for ?
Is this project a public good, can it be owned by the public.
Is it open source, can it be replicated and be used in other places.
Does the team have the skills to bring the project to life.
0:11:45 — Mike’s project ideas
Mike would like to know the skill set people have in our group and have that lead us.
Vineyards, soil sensors. Easy practical project.
Fun project. Katy Trail, Track hikers, turn in your tracker at a burger joint and get a free burger.
Pig farms losing 3G. Is there a way to upgrade to less expensive hardware.
Wallet Automation related project.
0:18:31 — Two Parts of the Grant Program
Infrastructure for the Network, Tools to help people use Helium.
IoT Applications, Trackers/Sensors.
0:19:12 — How many applications has DeWi Approved ?
All the Applications are public. There aren’t a ton and most are by dedicated user, so a lot have been approved.

0:20:02 — Bronson’s project ideas
Working with Local Government, Regenerative Agriculture, NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association)
0:21:57 — Is there an opportunity for an affiliate program (like CrossFit Affiliates, basically a franchise) to get resources to optimize the network?
MinerMatch, connects people with hotspots with people who have locations.
Work Opportunities and Bounties
Little confusing, but no, MinerMatch is not PirateRadio.
0:27:53 — Standardization
Certification for installers, consultants, etc.
Traveling Team. Going to conferences promoting IoT. Etc.
0:31:49 — What are the sensors out there ?
We would like to see a catalog or spreadsheet of sensors and what they do.
Yes. A list will be helpful with sensors with certified Helium approval.
0:33:40 — Is there an age limit for people who apply for Grants ?
There is no age limit. We encourage it. If they want to set up a couple sensors or development kits they are welcome to apply.
0:36:51 — Isaac Off Grid farmland ideas
Soil Regeneration
Regenerative Agriculture
Still looking into different types of devices
0:40:59 — What are the things we can ask for funds ?
DeWi doesn’t give funds for miners. But, Development Time, Sensors, other hardware.
0:43:28 — Is there a timeframe on projects ?
DeWi likes 12 month projects. If it’s a large project we would break it into separate grants with different phases.
0:47:36 — Building Education Resources
DeWi would like to fund Education Program Open to the Public.
0:48:34 — What are Validators written in ?
Validators are written in Erlang. Rust would be a community booster.
0:50:38 — Teaming up with CalFire
Parley Labs had a project for wild fire sensing
Huge project. Can be broken down into smaller projects with local Fire Departments.
With CalFire’s permission you can probably used a tower or some structure with power.
CERT (Community Emergency Response Team)
0:54:21 — How to Start ?
It’s easy to pitch a couple sentence idea to see if you are on the right track
0:55:19 — Next Week
Taxes. Next week we will have a Helium Tax Expert.
0:56:25 — Will High Endurance SD Cards be needed when light hotspots ?
There will be less reads writes needed for light hotspots. Keeping the one in there is fine.
